This genuine 18th-century Dutch “VOC” duit was remarkably recovered from a pirate ship hoard off the coast of Sri Lanka. Minted in 1790 by the Utrecht mint, this coin bears the insignia of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, or Dutch East India Company, a powerful entity granted the authority to wage wars and mint its own currency to manage its vast trading network. The coin was part of a cache believed to have been amassed by pirates who preyed on the lucrative Spice Route. These pirates frequently targeted the VOC ships laden with valuable spices, textiles, and other treasures bound for Europe from Asia.
